Botox
What is botox?
Botox is a neurotoxin that is injected into the muscle, resulting in temporary paralysis. This prevents contraction of the muscles that form wrinkles, creating a smoother overall appearance. Botox spreads 1cm in all directions of the injection site. Each muscle is targeted individually, and it is important to note that all faces and their muscles are not symmetrical.
How long does botox last?
Typically, the first time a person is injected with Botox, the results are the shortest, lasting anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months. The more frequently a person is injected, the longer the effects of Botox will last (3 months or more). The muscle function will eventually diminish, and with time less Botox can be needed with each treatment. Clients are advised to be retreated when the muscle function starts to return. This is a preventative approach in minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. The effects of Botox are seen gradually between 2-10 days, with the full effects shown by day 14. If the desired effect is not achieved by day 14, progress pictures will be consulted and “touch up” injections can be done if needed.
How much botox do I need?
Although everyone is different in terms of dosing based on the strength of their muscles, the average dose ranges are listed below.
Frontalis muscles (forehead): 10-20 units
Glabella (between eyebrows, “11s”): 15-30 units
Eyes (crow’s feet): 5-15 units/eye
Are there side effects?
There are no side effects of Botox, and Botox does not effect any other part of the body. However, there is a rare chance of adverse effects cause by the injection technique and the client’s post care. If Botox spreads into the eyelid or cheek muscles, it may cause the muscle to droop. In the event of this, there are medications prescribed to improve the symptoms of the droop. It is also important to note that Botox does wear off over time, so all adverse effects are temporary until the Botox wears off (up to 3 months).
What post injection instructions should I be aware of?
Remain upright for 4 hours after injections, avoid strenuous exercise/sweating for 24 hours, do not wear hat/headbands that will apply pressure to your forehead for 24 hours, avoid blood thinners/alcohol for 24 hours, no facials for 2 weeks.
